Process Safety Management Remains a Focus

On Tuesday I attended a CLE presentation by a safety consultant who provided a number of occupational injury rates, which showed how well the Chemical Industry fares in comparison to other industry sectors.  Still, he also explained that during OSHA chemical industry inspections, the Process Safety Management standards (1910.119) are the most frequently cited source of violations followed by respiratory protection, lockout/tagout, hazard communication, and powered industrial trucks. Coincidently, earlier this week was the 30th anniversary of the fatal chemical release in Bhopal, India.  The U.S. Chemical Safety Board used the occasion to reiterate the importance of process safety and to call for improved regulations. The CSB posted a short safety video message about the Bhopal incident and other recent incidents, which is available here.  I expect that we will see increased scrutiny in process safety management in the coming years.
